Celebrating a 90th birthday

Harold Dartez of Maurice, Louisiana, will be celebrating his 90th birthday on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.
A very special and well-attended family birthday party was held at the home of Harold and his wife of 64 years, Velta Frederick Dartez, on Saturday, January 14.
The event was hosted by their three children and their spouses - Michael and Phyllis Dartez, Alice and Kim Stewart, and Matt and Michelle Dartez.

Auxiliary Unit 29 supports community

The American Legion Auxiliary Vermilion Unit 29 once again shows their support to local schools and the education of our children.

Through their “Give 10 To Education” program they distributed supplies to four different schools in the area, giving ten supplies to each one.

The recipients were Seventh Ward Elementary, Eaton Park Elementary, Herod Elementary and J. H. Williams Middle School.

Eaglet hatches on camera

Thousands watched online as American bald eagles Harriet and her mate, M15, welcomed their first eaglet on New Year’s Eve, nearly two days after the chick began to hatch.

The eaglet, named E9, or eaglet 9, broke through its shell at 7:33 a.m. ET, according to the real estate company hosting the online live-stream. The new parents fed their latest addition throughout the day, and continued to incubate the second egg, which has yet to hatch.

The first eaglet broke free of its shell early Saturday.
